P2P days 42 and 43

Day 42 took us to Piseco, NY and I stayed in a cabin on Piseco Lake.  Not a bad place but the only internet access was in the lodge lobby and I didn’t feel like hanging out with 13 others in a small room geeking out.  Saturday, Day 42 was the first day of the trip that I felt completely weak on the bike.  Not sure why but I just didn’t have it. (The good news is. . . . . .I bounced back, felt super strong, and flattened out the hills today)  We did enter the Adirondack Park yesterday and continued through it today.  Most of the roads there had very few homes and businesses and had great landscapes of multi-colored trees in fall colors.  A few pics:

Looking South down the Hudson River nearing Vermont.

The Liberty Monument entering tonight’s visit to Ticonderoga, NY.  You history buffs know the importance of Fort Ticonderoga in the 7 Years War and the Revolutionary War.  Unfortunately riding all day doesn’t leave much time for sightseeing so I was unable to visit the fort.  The bottom of the statue is surrounded by four figures that represent the four groups whose military exploits are part of Ticonderoga’s past.  They are a Frenchman, a Scottish soldier,  a Native American and an American.  The figure on the top is the artist's interpretation of Liberty.  Oddly enough, the plaque is next to the statue in a traffic circle so the information is from your friends at Wikipedia.

If you have seen bikes painted completely whie leaning on posts or trees and don’t know what they are for they are called ghost bikes and represent a place where a cyclist was hit and killed by a car.  It looks like there must’ve been a high population of Smurfs in this small town.

I’ll be in Vermont this time tomorrow after what looks like a cold and rainy 103 miles with 7,500’ of climbing.  The route got longer than advertised since the ferry we were going to take across Lake Champlain is not running so we are going further North to a bridge.  I’m pretty sure Lake Champlain has its own version of the Loch Ness monster so I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled going over the bridge....the perfect photo of him could net me a fortune.  Hope to have a picture for you tomorrow.

Out.

  1. 5 river crossings in one trip - this really shows the extent of the country that you have biked - very exciting that you are close to the finish - ride strong to the end.
